If you turn the flame down too much, you will get incomplete burn and a high kerosene odor. If you turn a heater's flame up too high, you can get smoke and soot buildup. In general, you can estimate the size of the heater you need by multiplying the square footage of the room you plan to heat to 70° by the factor 22. For example, if you had a 20' X 20' basement den you wanted to zone-heat, you would perform the following calculations: [a] 20 X 20 = 400 (total number of square feet to be heated) [b] 400 X 22 (the constant factor) = 8,800 BTU/hour You'll need a heater rated at 8,800 BTU/hour to warm up your den. Naturally, you won't be able to find one that's rated exactly that, but the nearest size up, a 10,000 BTU model, should perform admirably.
